Chehalis

In 1851 the land that is now the city of Chehalis was part of Stuart Schuyler Saunders' 640-acre claim. In 1872 that land was incorporated into the city of Saundersville. The name was later changed to Chehalis.

Located midway between Seattle and Portland on I-5 the city of Chehalis is today a city of 7,000 people and the county seat for Lewis County. County government is located in the Lewis County Courthouse and Courthouse Annex on Main Street in Chehalis.

Passenger Trains no longer stop in Chehalis but the old Northern Pacific Railroad Depot built in 1912 lives on as the Lewis County Historical Museum. The old depot building and the Pennsylvania Avenue downtown district of Chehalis are both on the National Register of Historic Places. The address to contact the Lewis County Historical Museum is 599 NW Front Way, Chehalis WA., 98532 or call the museum at (360)748-0831.

The Veterans Memorial Museum, located just off of exit xx is dedicated to the men and women who have served the cause of freedom, and especially those from people from this area and region. In addition to the personnel information there are displays of weapons, uniforms and artifacts and more.
